Hailing from the wind-swept sand dunes of Castlecliff, Roots Provider have been providing raw roots reggae to the Whanganui community for more than 20 years now. Connected by a deep love for old school Jamaican roots and tikanga Māori, the band bring a hard-edged ghetto sound that’s unique in Aotearoa reggae today.

After for many years being quite content jamming locally, they've finally decided to share their sound with the rest of Aotearoa with the release of their debut, self-titled album Roots Provider.

Recorded between The Stomach Studio in Manawatu and Matarawa Studio in Whanganui - and arranged and mixed to reel-to-reel tape by acclaimed dub engineer Naram - Roots Provider has a classic reggae sound infused with the spirit of the Whanganui Awa. Led by a heavyweight rhythm section, the album is full of rich harmonies and lyrics that aren’t afraid to deal with serious issues.

Roots Provider also features notable contributions from fallen soldiers from the Whanganui reggae whanau, including the late, great saxophonist Johnny Paki – who composed many of the beautiful horns parts that bring so much colour to the album.

The sum of many parts, Roots Provider is taonga for all the whanau who have supported the band over the years.

I very like Rankin Ann's version. We need more of those messages in the dances and radio shows! The chorus is stuck in my head. And the riddim is very nice! Unfortunately they missed the oppurtunity to mix both songs into the dub version. reggae_radio
